Calling Mornington Peninsula students for My First Speech Competition
Year 10 to 12 students across the Mornington Peninsula could win a trip to Canberra and have the opportunity to speak in Parliament House as part of the 2022 My First Speech competition.
This competition will provide the opportunity for three lucky students from across Australia to be flown to Canberra with a parent or guardian to present their speeches live and undertake a program at Parliament House.
The competition asks years 10 to 12 students to consider what they would say if they were a newly elected Member of the House of Representatives and record themselves presenting the speech on video.
Federal Member for Flinders, Zoe McKenzie MP, encouraged all eligible Mornington Peninsula students to enter.
“As a primary school student, I was transformed by a trip to Canberra, learning about the processes of government and the workings of democracy,” Ms McKenzie said.
“This competition is a wonderful way for our next generation of community leaders to, quite literally, have their say in our national parliament.”
“In addition to them reading their speech in Parliament House, if a Mornington Peninsula winner is selected, I will also welcome them to attend the House of Representatives, where I will also read their words into Hansard, where they will stay for the rest of time.”
“While it is most important to make sure that speeches are submitted to www.aph.gov.au/myfirstspeech in order to have a chance to win the prize, I would love to receive copies of speeches and, if I am able, to read others into Hansard during sitting weeks.”
“I look forward to seeing many wonderful entries from the Peninsula over the next few weeks. Good luck to all who enter.”
Students looking for more information and to submit their speech can do so at www.aph.gov.au/myfirstspeech
Entries for the competition close at 5pm EST 31 August 2022.
